The Full Story
Dan Grimard is a skilled woodworker based on Vancouver Island, where he has spent over 30 years working with one of nature’s rarest and most beautiful materials — wood burls. These unique, swirling formations, harvested from ancient temperate rainforests on Vancouver Island, have captured Dan’s imagination throughout his career, both during his time in the logging industry and through the many connections he’s built with fellow enthusiasts. Over the years, friends and colleagues, recognising his deep passion, have sought him out to share their rare finds, knowing that Dan will turn them into something extraordinary.
But what exactly are wood burls? These rare growths form as part of a tree’s response to stress, such as injury or disease, and can take decades or even centuries to develop. The wood grain in a burl twists and turns unpredictably, creating stunning natural patterns that make each burl completely unique. Given the size of the trees Dan works with, he believes most of the burls he collects are over 100 years old—adding to their rarity and value.
Each burl tells a story, and Dan’s meticulous craftsmanship brings that story to life. Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind piece from his own design or a custom, bespoke project tailored to a client’s vision, every creation is a blend of natural beauty and Dan’s artistic touch. His work ranges from small, intricate items to larger statement pieces, all designed to showcase the timeless character and intricate patterns of these ancient woods.
Dan’s commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship has made him a sought-after artisan, known for turning raw, untouched burls into pieces that honor both the natural world and the rich heritage of the island’s forests.
